Suweida

Capital of the Hauran, Suweida has a place in the hearts of many Syrians for two reasons:

it’s the centre of the viticulture industry (some of the country’s best wines and araq come from round here) and it’s also the birthplace of Farid al-Atrache, a giant of the golden age of Arab music (see Arts in the Facts about Syria chapter). However, for the casual visitor anything that might once have been of interest in this largely Druze redoubt has long been swept away by modern expansion. The one exception - a place that alone justifies the effort to get here from Damascus - is the museum.
